Dr. Bennett Omalu
Originally from eastern Nigeria, Dr. Bennet Omalu is the first doctor to discover and identify Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)—chronic brain damage—as a major factor in the deaths of several professional athletes. After he published his findings, he was summarily dismissed—and even ridiculed—by his professional peers, the NFL, and the sports industry. Omalu stood his ground in search of the truth, and today, CTE has become generally accepted in the medical field. His findings have revolutionized neuroscience, sports medicine, the study of all types of brain trauma, and the entire sports industry. In 2015, Omalu’s life and work were chronicled in a book and film, both titled “Concussion.”
In 2015, Omalu was awarded a WebMD Health Heroes award for his discovery and efforts to raise awareness of CTE. He is also a recipient of the United States Sports Academy’s highest award in sports medicine, the Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award. He holds eight medical and non-medical degrees and certifications, including a Master’s in Business Administration from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master’s in Public Heath in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In addition to his work as a forensic pathologist, neuropathologist, and epidemiologist, he is the President of Bennet Omalu Pathology, Inc., a private medico-legal consulting corporation He continues to advise governmental and non-governmental agencies, hospitals, corporations, industries, families, and private attorneys in complex medical and legal cases. Omalu lives in Sacramento with his wife Prema and their two children.
